Several Panthers players currently hold records for feats at their position, and the Panthers team as a whole either holds or shares a few records themselves — some admittedly are better than others.To celebrate records week at SB Nation, let’s take a closer look at some of the records held by the Panthers and their players.Julius Peppers — No. 1 among active players in career sacks (154.5)Peppers ranks No. 4 among all players for career sacks, and only needs six sacks in 2018 to move up to No. 3 all-time over Kevin Greene. Fun fact: Three of the top four players in career sacks all played for the Panthers (Reggie White, Greene, Peppers).Cam Newton — No. 1 all-time in rushing TDs by a QB (54)Newton ranks No. 6 among active players for rushing touchdowns. Anderson was a good security blanket. He was professional, experienced, and generally competent. But he’s 35 now and the team decided to move on. Enter Garrett Gilbert and Taylor Heinicke, two quarterbacks whose combined NFL stats total one completion for 10 yards. Reports from Monday’s practice included notes that Gilbert and Heinicke were throwing interceptions by the truck load. That ain’t good, people. Having absolutely no proven depth behind Cam Newton should be a bigger red flag than it is right now. While Cam has been remarkably durable throughout his career, his injuries have been mounting in recent years. Since 2014 he’s had injuries to his ankle, ribs, knee, shoulder, and head (concussion). We also need to mention the lower back fractures from his 2014 car accident. While Cam rarely misses games and often plays banged-up

In scanning around the NFC South, most of the Panthers divisional rivals have followed the Derek Anderson model with experienced vets at backup QB. The Falcons have Matt Schaub. The Saints have Tom Savage (and TAYSOM HILL!!!). The Buccaneers have Ryan FItzpatrick who may come in handy in light of Jameis Winston’s suspension. Schaub, Savage, and Fitzpatrick aren’t going to win a team a Super Bowl. There are reasons why they are former starters and not current starters. You can throw Derek Anderson in with this group. While these types of backup veteran quarterbacks aren’t sexy, at least they’ve been huddles where teammates are looking to them for leadership. They’ve read defenses at the line of scrimmage and called audibles. They’ve seen blitz packages. They’ve thrown touchdowns. They’ve actually won some NFL games (and lost their fair share, too.) With all due respect to Garrett Gilbert and Taylor Heinicke, they’ve done nothing. They are totally unproven. While I hope they both turn out to be successful prospects, it’s awfully risky for the Panthers to roll the dice with either of them if Cam goes down for any reason this year. While Derek Anderson wasn’t spectacular, at least he was experienced. On the downside, Anderson did have a $2.2 million cap hit last year and cap space is at a premium right now in Carolina. Gilbert’s salary is $550,000 and Heinicke’s is $705,000, per Spotrac, but you get what you pay for. I hope I’m being an alarmist. I hope Cam is fully healthy all year. I hope the backup quarterbacksjust hold clipboards all season until we are demolishing the Saints at halftime in Week 17 and pull all of our starters. But if Cam misses a couple of key games, how much confidence do you have in Garrett Gilbert of Taylor Heinicke pulling out a win? When questions like that swirl around in my head, I really start to miss Derek Anderson.
